The Haynes Place Land After 1909-1910
Existing and proposed railroads in 1882
The 1882 map shown here, a small portion of Texas GLO historic map 2134, includes existing and proposed railroads. One railroad had already been built in a northeasterly direction across Jackson County from Victoria, but had bypassed Texana. That led to the movement of the county seat from Texana to Edna, which was on the new railroad, and the rapid decline of Texana. It appears that the proposed railroad (shown with little red hatch marks) to the east from Victoria across Jackson County would have gone right through the Haynes place. It was built after 1900, but followed a more southerly route, leading to the establishment of Vanderbilt as a major railroad town, and to the eventual creation of good, lifetime jobs for five Haynes family men (Edward, Louis, Basil, Raymond, and Lewis Hoffman, husband of Ruth).
This page contains links to Google maps that I have constructed to illustrate the status of some of the Haynes place land after it had been passed down to the children and grandchildren of Thomas and Celia, or around 1909-1910 or later.
Mary Julia Haynes Whalen had died in 1895 at age 28, and her children and husband Michael owned much of the Haynes place. Amos's two other children, Blanche Haynes Owens and Richard Daniel Haynes, still owned 775 acres on the upper end.
The final map shows the land east of FM 234 as it appears to be subdivided in 2010, but with no indication of ownership of the various tracts.
