Thomas Haynes Land Deals Outside the Ramon Musquiz Grant
A portion of Texas GLO historic map 887 of Calhoun County in 1863
The Ramon Musquiz Grant containing the Haynes place is the principal land area considered in this web site, but we would be remiss if we failed to mention the other Texas land deals that Thomas made. In fact, he made two land deals before he bought the Musquiz Grant land, and four others afterward. Since the areas involved vary from a lot in the town of Texana, to a labor (177 acres) in northern Jackson County, and on up to a league (4,428 acres) in southern Jackson County, the ability to zoom in and out with Google maps would come in quite handy if all of the areas were placed on the same map, because if the magnification level were set to view one of the big, one-league tracts, the small, one-labor tracts would appear only as tiny specks. So a Google map is exactly what we need to show all of these tracts. The easiest way to find the individual areas on the map is to click on one of the square colored areas to the left of the map. This will cause Google Maps to move the map so that the selected area is visible, and to display the area's description box with a pointer to the area. You will have to adjust the magnification level to suit your own tastes. Please note that this map is not precise. The location of each area on the map is just "in the ballpark" and the sizes are not necessarily to scale.
Some of the the individual area descriptions available via the links below contain portions of Texas General Land Office historic maps showing the original land grants.
