Land Deal: Thomas Haynes Buys One League Originally Granted to George Ewing by Stephen F. Austin
A portion of Texas GLO historic map 3709 of Jackson County
Thomas Haynes bought one league of land (4,428 acres) on the east side of the Lavaca River just below its junction with the Navidad River on May 6, 1851, for $450 (about $0.10 per acre) from William Pierpont. The land had previously been sold to Thomas Simons, then to Edward M. Glenn, and then to William Pierpont. This land was known as League 8 of Stephen F. Austin's Jackson County settlement, and was originally granted to George Ewing (on some maps misidentified as “Leo Ewing”). The land was bounded on the upper or north side by two leagues of land granted to Stephen F. Austin and on the south by one league granted to David A. Hoffman. Notice that this land is just across the Lavaca River from the Ramon Musquiz Grant land and the Haynes place (red smudge on the map).

Because of its prominent location, this land is easily identified on practically any historical map of Jackson County, such as GLO maps 3708, 3709, and 77324, as well as some Victoria County maps such as 4115 and 4117, even though the land was never considered to be in Victoria County.
In modern terms, Texas Highway FM 1593 South from Lolita toward Point Comfort takes a gradual turn to the southwest and then back to the south. Most of these changes in direction of the road occur within land that is part of the George Ewing grant.
Four year later, Haynes sold this one league of land to Baltzer for $1,000 (about $0.23 per acre) on May 25, 1855. Taxes at the typical rate of $0.003 per acre per year would have cost him about $13.28 per year.
