Land Deal: Thomas Haynes Buys a 1/3 League Tract Once Granted to Henry Baxter
A portion of Texas GLO historic map 4115 of Victoria County
Thomas Haynes bought 1,476 acres (or one-third of a league) of land on the west side of the Lavaca River at public auction on August 30, 1850, for $1.20 ($0.0008 per acre) plus $1 court cost. The land was being sold by Jackson County for non-payment of taxes. The land had been granted to H. Baxter. No location was specified in the deed. However, using GLO map 4115 of Victoria County published in 1858, this land is easily found, far up the Lavaca River, almost touching Lavaca County. The owner was shown as Henry Baxter. (All land west of the Lavaca River was once part of Victoria County.) Notice that this map also shows a portion of the Atascosita Road where it crosses the Lavaca River. This land is just below the two labors of land that Thomas had bought on the other side of the river in 1845.

Slightly over two years later, Haynes sold this 1,476 acre tract on the west side of the Lavaca River to Bankhead for $100 ($0.68 per acre) on October 6, 1852.
