Land Deal: Thomas Haynes Buys Lot 44 in the Town of Texana
A portion of Texas GLO historic map 4115 of Victoria County
Thomas Haynes bought Lot 44 in the town of Texana, the county seat of Jackson County, on December 9, 1851, for $500 from Ernest L. Jordan. The lot “fronted the public square” and contained a “large frame store house.” Nothing is known about whether Haynes ever used this property for anything, such as a law or real estate office or a place to stay while he was working in Texana. It would not have been an easy commute by horseback or carriage from his home on the Haynes place on the (wrong) west side of the Lavaca River, but he may have been able to take advantage of occasional steamboat service on the rivers.
All of the land included in the portion of Texas GLO map 4115 of Victoria County shown here was eventually made a part of Jackson County. In fact, the land east of the Lavaca River was never in Victoria County; the cartographer simply included the areas outlined in green for completeness.
We would have liked to have the opportunity to visit Texana and check out the current status of “Lot 44” but, unfortunately, the ghost town of Texana now lies beneath the waters of Lake Texana, just above the dam.
Haynes sold lot 44 in Texana to Rogers and Flanagan for $425 on November 20, 1852. Haynes held this lot for less than a year and lost $50 on the two deals. Of course, if he used the building himself or rented it to someone else, he still came out ahead on the deal. Source: Jackson County deed records, volume D, page 229 and volume D, page 291.
