Explanation of the Genealogical Chart
This is conventional outline form of genealogical chart. The major features of the structure and contents are: 1. The numbers represent the generation number of the person whose name is listed. For example, “….. 1 Thomas HAYNES” is the first generation, his children are all numbered “2” (such as “……. 2 Daniel HAYNES”), etc. A given line is also indented to indicate the generation. 2. The name of a person’s spouse(s) is preceded by a “+”. The name of person’s first spouse, if any, is listed on the following line, and the names of the children of that marriage (and their spouses and children) follow, recursively. This arrangement is then repeated for each following spouse. A spouse after the first one may be a little harder to distinguish, but is indented an appropriate amount to indicate the relationship (you may have to use a ruler or count the little dots). For example, “….. 1 Thomas Haynes” was married to “….. + Emma HENRY” as well as to “….. + Celia Ann WEBB”, and all of the children of his marriage to Emma appear before Celia’s name. Here, it looks like only "1 Thomas Haynes" and "2 Amos W. Haynes" had multiple marriages (Amos had three). 3. Names, initials, nicknames, and birth and death years are exact in some cases but estimated in others. This chart was compiled from multiple sources, including online copies and/or transcriptions of the U.S. Census reports for 1850-1930. Unfortunately, the 1890 census was lost in a fire in Washington, and would have been an important source of information for us. If we had never learned the year a person died, but that person’s name appeared on one census but not the next, we assumed that the person had died during that 10-year period, and we used the date of the later census. 4. When multiple spellings of names were available, we chose what we considered to be the most logical. For example, my grandmother’s maiden name appears on the marriage license at the Jackson County Clerk’s office as “Meridith”, but my cousin, Meredith, said that she was named after Grandma Haynes. I figured that “Meredith” with the “e” was more likely to be correct, so that is what I used. (Also, the Microsoft Word dictionary contains “Meredith”, but the spelling checker in Word complains about “Meridith”. That settles it!) 5. This chart has been modified slightly to make it easier to find Celia Ann Haynes and her children. A blank line has been added before each of those names to make them stand out a little. |
