Thomas Haynes moves his family to the Haynes place
A year or so after purchasing the Musquiz Grant land, the Haynes family moved from (Port) Lavaca to Jackson County, to land within the Musquiz Grant and to what became known as “the homestead place of Thomas Haynes,” or “the Haynes place,” for short. He apparently decided to keep some of the land for a farm/ranch (or “plantation,” as he called it in one deed), and to sell the rest. As nearly as can be determined from all the deeds we studied, the areas to be kept are the ten that are high-lighted on the maps, and total about 4,000 acres (areas T, 5, R, B, J, 3, D, P, and C), although the southwestern pasture in area (P) was never mentioned in a single deed during either Thomas’s or Celia’s lifetime. We believe that area (O) did not exist, and that it was created later when the Lavaca River changed its course during a major flood.
(We do not know the exactly when the Haynes family moved to their new home on the Lavaca River. The previous owner of the portion of the Musquiz Grant that Thomas had bought at public auction had one year to pay the back taxes to recover his land, so Haynes would have waited until that window had closed.)

If we had taken a census of the Thomas Haynes family at this time, it would have looked similar to the following, which is based upon the official 1850 federal census, but projected back to 1849 (a whole year!). (Please see the complete set of census reports here.)
