On October 29, 1891, Celia A. Haynes filed a Power of Attorney document naming Michael C. Whalen. He was the husband of Celia’s granddaughter, Mary Julia Haynes Whalen. One of the intents of the POA was to have Michael arrange for legal representation for Celia in the case filed against her by her former daughter-in-law, Julia A. Haynes Allen.

Know all men by these presents, that I, Celia A. Haynes, a feme sole, of said State and County, have made, constituted and appointed and by these presents do make, constitute and appoint and in my place and stead put and depute M. C. Whalen of the County of Victoria and State of Texas my true and lawful attorney for me, and in my name and for my use, to demand, receive and receipt for all such sum or sums of money, debts, and other demands whatsoever, to take full and absolute control and management of all property which I own, to mark and brand the increase of my stock of cattle, and to sell or dispose of such of said stock of cattle as to him may seem proper, giving and granting to him the said M. C. Whalen full power to use any moneys he may receive for me for the payment of any and all debts and expenses incurred in the management and control of my said property.
My said attorney is especially authorized to secure legal counsel at a fair and reasonable compensation to represent me in a certain suit now pending in the District Court of Jackson County, Texas numbered on the docket of said Court 476 and styled Julia A. Allen et al versus Celia A. Haynes, and to pay for the legal services rendered in said suit out of any monies received for me from any source whatsoever.
And generally to do and execute and perform all and everything requisite and necessary to be done in the premises as fully to all intents and purposes as I myself could do if personally present although the matter should require more special authority than is herein comprised hereby ratifying and confirming all that my said attorney may or shall do in the premises by virtue hereof.
