Calhoun County, Book A, Page 74 Division of lots among investors in the town of Lavaca
July 23, 1845
Republic of Texas
Victoria County
This Indenture made and entered into this 23rd day of July 1845, between John M. Smith of Lavaca, C. R. Bullard of New Orleans, Thomas Haynes of New Orleans, Thomas L. Hurd of Lavaca, and Araline Brooks of New Orleans late Araline Hughes, wife of James P. Brooks and James P. Brooks, her husband, joint owners and tenants in common of the town of Lavaca in the County of Victoria and Republic of Texas,
Whereas the several parties have severed undivided interests in said town and wishing to partition and divide to each of the parties belonging to them that the same may be held in finality? have this day and by these presents do in consideration of the premises, divide and make partition of said town except what has been heretofore conveyed by the proprietor, and allot to the parties aforesaid severally the following lots and squares; viz:
To the said Bullard, Lots no. one (1) Two (2) Four (4) in Block A, Lots Two (2), Three (3) and Six(6) in Block C ...
It's a long deed that simply lists each of the lots and blocks that each of the investors was to receive in the town of Lavaca. From the deed, we produced an Excel spreadsheet (shown below) that lists the lots and blocks to be assigned to each of the investors. Each block contained up to 12 lots. Apparently in a random drawing, each investor drew the numbers of the blocks or lots he was to receive. The results are tabulated in the spreadsheet. For example, in block A, Bullard received lots 1, 2, and 4 for a total of 3 lots, while 9 lots were excluded from the drawing because they had been sold previously. Totals are shown at the end of the spreadsheet. Apparently, waterfront blocks and lots were assigned higher values than the others, but which blocks were on the waterfront is not known to me (perhaps blocks A-H?)
